Elapsed Time Calculator

See how much time passed, with a timeline and the subtraction steps shown.

Elapsed time

2 hours 35 minutes

8:4511:20
  1. Borrow 1 hour: 11:20 becomes 10 hours and 80 minutes.
  2. 80 − 45 = 35 minutes.
  3. 10 − 8 = 2 hours.

Subtract time with borrowing

Subtract the minutes first. If the ending minutes are smaller, borrow one hour and add 60 to the ending minutes. Then subtract the hours. For overnight problems, split the timeline at midnight or add 24 hours to the end.

Examples

8:45 to 11:20: borrow one hour, then calculate 80 − 45 = 35 minutes and 10 − 8 = 2 hours.

11:30 PM to 1:10 AM: 30 minutes to midnight plus 1 hour 10 minutes equals 1 hour 40 minutes.

Common questions

Is elapsed time different from a clock time?

Yes. Elapsed time is a duration, while a clock time is a position in a day.

Why borrow 60 minutes?

One hour contains 60 minutes, so borrowing one hour adds 60 to the minute column.

For dates and breaks, use the main time duration calculator. See the full duration guide.
