Decimal hour formula
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600. Reverse conversion multiplies decimal hours by 3,600, rounds to integer seconds, and then splits the result.
Examples
8 h 15 min = 8 + 15 ÷ 60 = 8.25 hours.
6.6 hours = 6 hours plus 0.6 × 60 = 6 h 36 min.
Common mistakes
Thirty minutes is 0.5 hour, not 0.30 hour. Do not apply a payroll increment unless the relevant policy requires it.
Why offer 6-minute rounding?
Six minutes equals one tenth of an hour, so it aligns with one-decimal-hour records. That does not make it universally appropriate.
Can conversion create 59.999 minutes?
No. The calculator converts through integer seconds before formatting.
